Kevlar Helmets Material: Are they as good as they look?

Of all the different kinds of materials used for creating ballistic rated helmets, Kevlar remains the most popular as well as the most used by manufacturers all over. For a long time now, Kevlar has been used by the US Army amongst others. Kevlar is an aramid fabric with a phenolic resin system that possesses ballistic-rated characteristics.

Although, Kevlar is not a 100% free from disadvantages, it still offers great ballistic and heat resistance. It possesses an anti-deformation feature, making it one of the most sort after material in the bulletproof industry. However, when compared to other materials such as PE (polyethylene), Kevlar is lacking in terms of elastic resistance. This can cause the wearer to suffer from blunt trauma or after-shot pain, regardless of the deflection of the bullet.

Kevlar is often used in the manufacturing of different kinds of ballistic helmets. The PASGT, MICH, and Above The Ear (ATE) helmets all have elements of Kevlar in their composition.

In the PASGT ballistic helmet, the outer part of the helmet is constructed with about 19 different layers of Kevlar. This is to provide the wearer with ballistic protection against bullets, projectiles as well as shrapnel. Due to the ballistic resistance of the Kevlar, this helmet has a Level IIIA rating from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).

Crafted out of advanced Kevlar material, the MICH ballistic helmet is known more ballistic protection, especially against handgun shots. The helmet is designed with a four-point retention system. It is also made with the pad system for more protection, comfort, and safety.

The ATE ballistic helmets are slightly heavy. This is because they are made out of advanced version of aramid Kevlar. They provide additional protection for the wearers and ensure safety against projectiles.
