Level IV Armor Plates Materials

It is very unlikely for you to find yourself in need of protection from sniper fire or anti-material rifles. But if you ever do, it’s important to have an NIJ armor level iv plate ready to shield your chest and abdomen. Armor level Iv plates are crafted from advanced ceramics and are extremely effective in stopping bullets. They can absorb the force of a. 30-caliber bullet without harming the wearer.

Manufacturers use different antiquated materials to make armor level iv plates, but the following three are the most common:

  • Chemical Formula: Al2O3 – Aluminum Oxide (Alumina)
  • B4C Boron Carbide (Tetrabor)
  • SiC, or silicon carbides
  • Ceramics

Armor level iv plates made of Boron Carbide or Silicon Carbide are substantially more expensive than those made of Alumina, both because of the materials’ higher production cost and their lighter weight. Even so, the weight savings of around 20% will be worthwhile for many missions. Any of these three varieties can be purchased, and it is up to the buyer to decide whether they need something used for brief missions that comes with extra baggage or something that is easier on the knees but costs more.

There are no specific guidelines for the materials of armor level Iv plates, but at the moment, ceramic and aluminum hard plates are the best options. Similar to NIJ Level III armor, armor level Iv plates are constructed by compressing many layers of ballistic material into a single, impenetrable slab. These blocks, in contrast to something like steel, are the ideal hardness while still providing adequate shock absorption. They disperse the force of an impact throughout the entire plate because they are constructed from long molecular strands of hexagonal crystals, with a single molecule often running the length of the plate. Alumina lacks the hexagonal crystal structure and has its molecules arranged in a crisscross pattern that helps to distribute the forces acting on it evenly. Al2O3 armor will be bulkier and heavier due to the lack of a suitable crystal, but it will provide the same level of protection.
